HISTORY
THE SOUTH DOWNS WAY
The property enjoys a historic location on The South Downs Way. It is mentioned by name in every publication relating to The South Downs Way. The 100 mile Way has been trodden over the centuries by pilgrims and wayfarers alike. It follows the old routes and droveways along the chalk escarpment and ridges of the South Downs, from the historic city of Winchester to the seaside town of Eastbourne.

Parish records in the nearby village of Chalton record the fact that during the English Civil War (1642 - 1651) Oliver Cromwell and his men requisitioned the Red Lion Inn in Chalton and used it for their local headquarters. The parish church of Chalton served as their stables and blacksmith. They would ride down The South Downs Way on their way to skirmishes at South Harting and stop to water their horses at the pond at Coulters Dean Farm. Several artefacts from the period have been found in and around the pond and further investigation is planned.
