MIDHURST, SOUTH HARTING AND ROWLANDS CASTLE
The property is less than a mile from the border of Hampshire with West Sussex. The market town of Midhurst is close by. It has great historical, social and political significance - Cowdray House played host to both Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII. Guy Fawkes once worked at the house, which later caused the Montague family to be implicated in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. In the Civil War, the Parliamentarians used the house as a Roundhead barracks. Partially destroyed by fire in 1793 the magnificent ruins now tower over the town's water meadows and visitors can explore where Kings and Queens of England once stood. On your way through the lanes to Midhurst you will pass through the village of South Harting.

The Village Stocks at South Harting
A few miles south of the property, past Idsworth, is the village of Rowlands Castle, which has its own Doctor's Surgery, Post Office and Vet. During the Second World War British, Canadian and Free French troops were stationed in the village. The King George VI stone in the village marks the spot where King George VI came to the village and inspected and bade farewell to British troops about to leave for D-Day. 'Tea on the Green' overlooking the Village Green is a traditional tearooms selling the most delicious home-made cakes.
